Retired management expert drowns in swimming pool of gated housing society in Wanowrie
Pune: An 85-year-old retired management expert drowned in a swimming pool of a gated housing society in Wanowrie on Wednesday morning.
Wanowrie police said the victim resided in one of the 600 flats in the society along with his wife (82). His daughter and son stay in the US.
"A lifeguard, who doubles up as an attendant at the society gym, had told the victim not to enter the pool water as the latter was suffering from blood pressure and breathing issues. However, the victim did not listen to the lifeguard, who then went inside the gym to attend to a water leakage problem," police sub-inspector Balasahe Wakade told TOI.
"A little later, the lifeguard spotted the victim floating motionless in the pool. With the help of a security staffer, he pulled the victim out and took him to a nearby hospital where the victim was declared dead," Wakade said, adding the body was sent to Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC) for post-mortem.
Senior inspector Satyajit Admane said, "AFMC has certified drowning as the cause of death in its preliminary report. We have registered an accidental death and will investigate the matter further to ascertain if there was any negligence on the part of the lifeguard or any other person associated with the facility. The victim's wife told us that her husband was suffering from breathing and blood pressure issues, but he would visit the pool daily for a swim. She told us that she had no complaint against the pool authorities."
When contacted, the society chairperson told TOI over phone, "I do not wish to make any comment as this matter is a medico legal case."
The society's secretary said, "We only know that an elderly man drowned in the pool. We don't know how the incident took place. The lifeguard pulled the man out of the pool with the help of security staffers."
The victim's niece, who was present at AFMC, said, "My uncle, a retired strategic management expert, was an expert swimmer. His death has shocked our family members, friends, and well-wishers. He was associated with several institutes because of his expertise in the field of management. He had just returned from the US after meeting his son and daughter. We have informed his children about his death, and they will return to Pune on Thursday. His funeral will be performed on Friday."
Meanwhile, senior inspector Admane said, "We will soon serve notices to the lifeguard and the society officer-bearers asking them to join the investigation and help us to get a clear picture of how the incident may have occurred."
Ruby Hall Clinic's spokesperson Ali Daruwala in a statement said the lifeguard brought the patient to the accident & emergency (A&E) department of the clinic in an unconscious and unresponsive state at 8:30 am. "The patient showed no signs of pulse, blood pressure, or active respiration. Immediate resuscitation efforts, including CPR and advanced life support measures, were initiated. Despite all medical interventions, there was no return of spontaneous circulation. ECG monitoring confirmed no electrical or mechanical activity of the heart, and the patient was declared dead at 9:13am," he said.
