The Mallorca Hotel Federation (FEHM) has refuted claims that the island is an overcrowded tourist destination and predicts that the 2025 tourist season will maintain similar levels to the previous year. Speaking at ITB Berlin 2025, FEHM President Javier Vich emphasized that Mallorca remains a well-managed and desirable travel destination, contrary to reports suggesting overtourism issues.
During meetings with key German tour operators at the ITB Berlin 2025 tourism fair, Vich reiterated that the perception of overcrowding is exaggerated. He acknowledged that, like any global travel destination, certain areas experience high tourist footfall due to their popularity. However, he dismissed the idea that Mallorca as a whole is facing an overtourism crisis.
“We must send a clear message that it is not accurate to generalize when discussing overcrowding in Mallorca. The reality is that only specific locations attract high tourist numbers, and these are limited to a handful of areas,” Vich stated.
He compared the situation to famous landmarks in other major cities, highlighting that tourist congestion is a localized issue rather than an island-wide phenomenon. “It is the same as visiting the Eiffel Tower in Paris or Central Park in New York. There are always some high-density areas in any global city, but that does not mean the entire destination is overcrowded,” he explained.
German tour operators, a crucial market for Mallorca’s tourism sector, have not expressed concerns over saturation, according to Vich. Instead, they remain optimistic about the island’s continued appeal to international travelers. The upcoming summer season is expected to match 2024’s robust performance, with steady demand for accommodations and travel services.
The FEHM president emphasized that local authorities and tourism stakeholders are actively implementing destination management strategies to maintain a balanced flow of visitors. These efforts include improved infrastructure, technological solutions for crowd control, and sustainable tourism practices that ensure both visitors and residents benefit from the island’s tourism economy.
Vich outlined proactive measures being taken to address high visitor numbers in key locations. These initiatives include:
By integrating these strategies, Mallorca aims to ensure a seamless and enjoyable experience for travelers while maintaining the island’s environmental and cultural integrity.
Mallorca remains one of Spain’s most sought-after travel destinations, attracting millions of visitors annually. The island’s diverse offerings, from pristine beaches and historic sites to luxury resorts and outdoor activities, make it a top choice for both leisure and business travelers.
As the global tourism industry evolves, Mallorca continues to adapt by balancing visitor demand with sustainability efforts. Government initiatives and private sector collaborations are key to shaping the island’s tourism future, ensuring that it remains competitive while mitigating potential challenges related to high visitor numbers.
Industry analysts predict that Mallorca’s tourism sector will remain resilient, with stable visitor numbers and consistent hotel occupancy rates throughout 2025. Several factors contribute to this positive outlook:
Despite ongoing debates about overtourism, Mallorca’s tourism industry remains strong, resilient, and well-prepared to handle visitor demand effectively. Through innovative management strategies, technological advancements, and sustainable policies, the island continues to provide a high-quality travel experience without compromising its infrastructure or environment.
With stakeholders across the industry committed to maintaining a balanced approach to tourism, Mallorca is set to sustain its reputation as a world-class destination for years to come. The outlook for 2025 remains positive, reaffirming the island’s position as a leading travel hub in Spain and beyond.
