Udaipur: A man who allegedly shot at the sarpanch of Nandwel in Dabok police station area of Udaipur city late Tuesday night was arrested Thursday, police said.
The accused, Piyush Rajput, a resident of Badgaon in Udaipur, had shot at Devilal Dangi, nephew of Mavli MLA Pushkarlal Dangi. A bullet passed through Devilal's thigh, and he remains under treatment at a private hospital. Rajput confessed to police he purchased a country-made gun from someone to shoot at the sarpanch.
SHO Hukam Singh said Rajput, a lawyer practising at a court in Udaipur for the past seven years, had a property dispute with the Dangis and that he, along with a companion, carried out the shooting at about 10:30pm .
"We identified the accused from CCTV footage. Before committing the crime, Rajput left his mobile phone at a known person's hotel to avoid being traced through mobile location. Efforts are on to trace and arrest his accomplice," said Singh.
During interrogation, Rajput told police his father, Mithlesh, had finalised a deal to buy a plot of land from a person named Suresh Salvi. "He said the sarpanch of Nandwel also contacted Salvi to buy the same plot and prevented Mithilesh from acquiring it. Rajput said his father was troubled by this, which led him to plan the shooting on the sarpanch. We will probe to ascertain where and from whom he bought the gun. Suresh Salvi, the land seller, will also be questioned," said the SHO.
