8 AUD students suspended for ‘harassing’ classmate
New Delhi: Eight students of Dr BR Ambedkar University Delhi (AUD)have been suspended for one year for allegedly mentally harassing a female student after she threw a chocolate wrapper in class last Sunday on the Karampura campus.
The AUD administration had ordered a proctorial investigation after the student's mother filed a complaint. The decision was taken following the investigation.
The university found five students guilty of harassment, and three of revealing the girl's identity and spreading misleading information on the university's mail, social media and other platforms.
Last Sunday, the second-year global studies student accidentally threw a chocolate wrapper during a class. Subsequently, some classmates allegedly began mentally harassing her by passing various comments. She even fell in panic and got injured, after which she went home. Some students allegedly further harassed her by creating memes in the class WhatsApp group, leading to deterioration in her health.
"Her family had to admit her to a hospital for treatment. The student's mother sent a complaint via email to the AUD administration on Sunday night, prompting action," said a university official.
AUD stated that the issue of indiscipline came to the university's attention on Sunday. Upon receiving information from the student's mother, an investigation was ordered. "Following a thorough investigation by the proctor committee, strict action was taken. It was stated that all students involved in the incident were immediately expelled (from the campus), and their entry into the university is completely banned," said the official.
"The suspension notice sent to the students by the university states that they are suspended for one year or two semesters ," the official added.
