Anna Nagar Tower park set to get 30 crore revamp
Chennai: Greater Chennai Corporation will soon give a colourful makeover to the 15-acre Anna Nagar Tower Park with new amenities such as fountains, play equipment for kids, toilets, and pond renovation.
At an estimated 30 crore, the corporation will set up fountains just behind the tower and will also plant up to 1,000 Miyawaki trees. The pond, with more than 2,000 fish, will also be cleaned up and algae removed, while a fresh coat of paint will be given to the 133-feet tower.
The footpaths, which are about 2,196 metres long, will be demolished and relaid, and a ladies' gym constructed. Visitors will also get free Wi-Fi access at 11 locations.
GCC Commissioner J Kumaragurubaran said two new toilet blocks with eight toilets each for men and women are being built. "Tenders are being floated to hire a housekeeping agency that has to deploy three security personnel and 14 sweepers. 100 sitting benches too are being set up."
With more than 10,000 visitors during weekends, the park has been a major attraction. Of late, the corporation received close to 20 complaints last month on poor upkeep and also inadequate sitting benches. Further, residents also complained of a lack of parking facilities around the park. GCC is also planning to charge a fee for people to enter the tower to control the crowd, as sometimes, people who go up remain there for hours.
