Pintu and his family live in Naini’s Arail area. His extended family consists of around 100 members, and together, they started preparing for the Mahakumbh months in advance. The family invested in building and maintaining 130 boats, ensuring they were ready to ferry pilgrims during the grand event.
To fund this, Pintu even mortgaged his mother’s jewelry. Initially, his mother was worried about losing their money, but as the Mahakumbh progressed and they started earning well, her fears turned into joy. More than the earnings, the family is now proud that CM Yogi Adityanath personally recognized their hard work and success.
According to Pintu, his family collectively earned around Rs. 30 crore during the 45-day-long Mahakumbh by operating their 130 boats. When asked about charging excessive fares, he clarified that they only followed the government-set rates and never overcharged pilgrims. In fact, some devotees even gave them extra money as donations.
Building a single boat costs approximately Rs. 50,000 to Rs. 60,000, but during the festival, each boat earned more than Rs. 50,000 per day. Over a month, a single boat made Rs. 23 lakh, which added up to the massive total of Rs. 30 crore from all 130 boats.
During the Mahakumbh Mela, the official boat fare was set at Rs. 483 per person. However, several reports said that passengers were charged anywhere between Rs. 2,000 to Rs. 4,000 per ride. For a 10-seater boat, if each passenger paid Rs. 1,500, the earnings for a single trip amounted to Rs. 15,000. Since multiple trips were made daily, the income quickly multiplied.
Pintu Mallah, who comes from a family of over 100 members, shared that everyone worked tirelessly during the event. He described their earnings as nothing short of a divine blessing. Expressing gratitude, he said, “Thanks to Yogi Ji and Modi Ji, this grand event was made possible, and special attention was given to boatmen like us. We had never seen so much money in our lives.”
Pintu’s family alone owns 70 boats, while most families in the area had 10 to 20 boats each. As a result, every boatman in their village, and even across Prayagraj, saw a dramatic improvement in their financial situation. “We never imagined we would earn this much,” Pintu said, highlighting how the Mahakumbh transformed their lives.
