New Delhi, March 5, 2025: The Central government has approved the ₹4,081 crore Kedarnath ropeway project, a transformative initiative that will drastically reduce travel time from Sonprayag to Kedarnath from 8-9 hours to just 36 minutes.

Developed under the National Ropeways Development Programme – Parvatmala Pariyojana, the 12.9-kilometer-long ropeway will be built on a Design, Build, Finance, Operate, and Transfer (DBFOT) model. The government stated that this project would significantly ease the journey for pilgrims, who currently endure long and strenuous treks to reach the holy shrine.

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw hailed the project as a “major milestone” in improving the pilgrimage experience for devotees traveling to Char Dham. Once completed, the ropeway is expected to provide seamless access to Kedarnath, enhancing both convenience and safety for travelers.
