Following reports about use of plastic sheets for steaming idlis in other States, officials of the Tamil Nadu Food Safety and Drug Administration Department inspected shops preparing idlis at Karungalpalayam here on Tuesday.

A team comprising J. Thanga Vignesh, Designated Officer, along with food safety officers Selvaraj, Selvan and Arunkumar, inspected roadside shops where idlis are prepared in large quantities and advised them to adhere to guidelines. During the inspection, the team found banned plastic bags in the shops and seized them. A fine of ₹6,000 was imposed on a shopkeeper, and a notice was issued. Also, a fine of ₹3,000 was imposed for storing and distributing snacks wrapped in newspapers, and a notice was issued.

Mr. Thanga Vignesh said plastic sheets contained toxic chemicals which could pose health risks. He said a one-day food safety training programme would be organised for idli shop owners and workers soon. The public can report food-related complaints via WhatsApp at 9444042322, the officer added.
