Dibrugarh: Union minister of ports, shipping & waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, on Tuesday laid the foundation stone for a state-of-the-art patient care facility at Assam Medical College & Hospital (AMCH) in Dibrugarh. The 37-bedded multi-storied facility, funded by Oil India Limited's (OIL) Corporate Social Responsibility, will be constructed at a cost of Rs 8.89 crore.
The four-floor structure will feature 37 well-equipped rooms designed to provide advanced medical care to patients across the northeast. AMCH, established as the first medical college in Northeast India, has long served as a crucial healthcare hub for Assam and neighbouring states.
"The facility represents our commitment to strengthening healthcare infrastructure in the northeast. AMCH has a storied history of service to our region, and this addition will significantly enhance its capacity to deliver quality medical care. The 37-bedded facility will not only benefit the people of Assam, but also those from the neighbouring states, who rely on AMCH for advanced medical treatment," Sonowal said.
Dr Sanjeeb Kakati, principal and chief superintendent of AMCH, said, "The facility will address the growing healthcare needs of our community and allow us to serve patients with greater comfort. It will also reduce the burden on our existing infrastructure. We thank OIL for their generous support."
The project follows a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between OIL and AMCH on August 20, 2024.
The new facility is expected to significantly reduce waiting times for patients seeking specialised care and will strengthen AMCH's position as a premier medical institution in the northeast. Construction is scheduled to begin immediately and is scheduled to be completed by the next fiscal year.
The ceremony was attended by chairman of the Tourism Development Corporation Rituparna Baruah, chairman of the District Development Authority Ashim Hazarika, and senior officials from OIL and AMCH.
