2 more arrested for looting Rs 21L from ATM
Bhubaneswar: Commissionerate police on Tuesday arrested two serial offenders who allegedly looted Rs 21.77 lakh from an ATM in Sriram Nagar area here in Jan.
The police identified the accused as A Rustam (36) from Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh and Sheikh Mijanur Rehman Mulla (45) from West Bengal. With this, the total number of arrests in the case rose to eight.
"Rustam and Mulla are the main masterminds. Mulla carried out a similar theft of an ATM under the Dhauli police station area in 2022. He was then arrested. After his release on bail, he planned and executed the Sriram Nagar ATM theft with the help of his associates, who included some locals," commissioner of police S Dev Datta Singh said.
Singh said that Rustam is also a known offender who was previously lodged in Goa jail for an ATM theft case. He obtained bail and was released a few months ago.
On Jan 24 night, the gang uprooted an ATM of a nationalised bank from Sriram Nagar and transported it in a stolen autorickshaw to a river bank. They breached the ATM using a gas cutter and took Rs 21,77,700 in cash. During investigation, police recovered the damaged ATM and autorickshaw.
