Ahmedabad: Bopal police on Monday arrested a domestic caregiver and her husband for allegedly stealing gold and silver jewellery worth Rs 8.34 lakh from a residence in South Bopal on Feb 13.
The theft took place at a flat in Arohi Elysium in South Bopal. The complainant had hired a woman, a native of Banswara in Rajasthan, through a home service agency to care for her ailing mother-in-law.
Since Dec 24, the woman had been working at the residence, looking after household chores and elderly care. "The woman and her husband were secretly plotting to rob the family," said a police official.
"During her work, she gained access to the bedroom cupboard where the family's gold and silver jewellery was stored. Over time, she allegedly stole two gold mangalsutras, two gold chains, a Ganpati pendant, three pairs of gold bangles, children's bracelets and rings, and silver ornaments — around 275 grams of gold and 100 grams of silver," the official added.
The theft came to light when the complainant's ailing mother-in-law recovered from her illness and asked for her jewellery. Upon checking the cupboard, the family was shocked to find the ornaments missing.
A police complaint was filed at Bopal police station. The police have arrested the couple and recovered some of the stolen valuables. Further investigation is underway to recover the remaining jewellery and uncover if the duo was involved in similar thefts at other homes where she worked as a domestic help.
