Chandigarh: Continuing their protest against the changes being made in the Rock Garden and the cutting of trees, a group of city residents will start the ‘
Chipko movement' at the Rock Garden on Tuesday.
‘Saving Chandigarh', a group of city residents, is against the demolition of a section of the boundary wall of the Rock Garden and will initiate the ‘hug a tree' movement. The group has also written to the Punjab governor and UT administrator in this regard, stating, "We are a collective of Chandigarh residents who are concerned about the recent activities around Rock Garden, which resulted in the axing of trees. We understand that the vehicular traffic of the high court is high, but at the same time, we would like to bring to your notice that this has resulted in the axing of approximately 200 trees and the demolition of the Rock Garden's wall."
"Both trees and Rock Garden are the distinct identity of Chandigarh, which makes this city a unique example. This city was meticulously designed by Le Corbusier and MS Randhawa, the first DC of Chandigarh, who was also a horticulturist and a connoisseur of art. We would like to bring to your notice that Rock Garden and its periphery come under the ecologically sensitive lake's catchment area. This catchment area in Chandigarh is an ecologically sensitive zone (ESZ). It plays a crucial role in maintaining the ecological balance of the region," the group added.
