Four people, including a two-year-old girl, were killed and four others injured when a speeding SUV collided head-on with a two-wheeler coming from the opposite direction near Kuppahalli in Bangarpet, Kolar district, on the yet to be formally inaugurated Bengaluru-Chennai Expressway on Sunday night.

Since the work on the Karnataka part of the expressway was almost complete, the police had allowed traffic movement to begin on it recently.

The deceased have been identified as Mahesh, 45, the SUV driver, his relatives Ratnamma, 60, and Udvitha, 2, both seated in the front, and the bike rider. They were killed on the spot.

Four others in the car, from Mahesh’s family – Sushmitha, Virutha, Sujatha and Sunil — were injured and are being treated at different hospitals in Kolar Gold Fields (KGF). The family resides at Kammasandra in KGF and was returning home after visiting Bengaluru, when the accident occurred.

The SUV was over speeding and lost control and crashed into the two-wheeler coming from the opposite direction. The impact of the accident was so high that the front position of the vehicle was damaged, the police said.

The Bangarapet police rushed to the spot and shifted the victims to the hospital.

“We suspect rash driving and overspeeding as reasons for the accident. Further investigation is on. A forensic report of the vehicles involved and the spot will reveal the exact cause,” a senior police official said.
