Thane-Borivli tunnel work to start before rain
Mumbai: The first of four massive tunnel boring machines (TBMs) for the Thane-Borivli twin tunnel project cleared its factory acceptance test and is set to arrive at the Thane launch shaft site in April.
Tunnelling work is expected to begin before the monsoon, marking a major development in MMRDA's plan to enhance connectivity between Thane and Borivli. The second TBM is set to undergo a factory acceptance test later this month.
The twin 10.8km tunnels, being excavated beneath SGNP, will connect Ekta Nagar in Borivli to Tikuji-Ni-Wadi in Thane. The project, executed by Megha Engineering & Infrastructures, aims to cut Thane-Borivli travel by 12km, saving about 1 hour. This direct link will also decongest traffic on Ghodbunder Road and Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road.
