Koraput: In a bid to enhance law enforcement and instil a sense of security among residents, the Jeypore town police in the district have launched an initiative to strengthen policing at the grassroots level. As part of this initiative, police officials are conducting door-to-door campaigns across all 28 wards of the town to gather first-hand information about law-and-order issues.
According to the inspector in-charge of Jeypore town police station, Iswar Tandi, the campaign aims to collect detailed data on the total number of households in each ward, tenants, and individuals with suspicious activities. "During the campaign, one-to-one discussion is being done with the locals and based on their information a database will be made for people with suspicious behaviour and a criminal background and they will be kept under surveillance," Tandi said.
The initiative is also intended to bridge communication gap between the police and the public since many residents hesitate to approach law enforcement agencies to file complaints. By bringing policing closer to the community, officials hope to build trust and encourage people to share information without fear.
According to Tandi, one of the major concerns addressed by this campaign is the infiltration of individuals from other states who take up rented accommodations in Jeypore and engage in illegal activities, particularly ganja smuggling. "With this exercise, the police aim to track such activities and curb criminal operations at an early stage," Tandi added.
Additionally, the police are urging residents to install CCTV cameras at their homes, which could serve as crucial evidence in times of emergency.
The campaign comes in the wake of a recent surge in robberies and criminal activities in Jeypore, which had drawn criticism from various quarters. However, in a special crackdown, the police have arrested over a dozen criminals involved in multiple robberies in the past week.
Meanwhile, locals have praised the police initiative to strengthen law enforcement in the town.
"It's a good step by the police and hopefully, it will help lead to a safer environment for residents," B P Sahu, a Jeypore resident, said.
