Pune: A young man from Dhobarwadi, Ghorpadi, allegedly died by suicide due to persistent harassment by two illegal moneylenders. The Wanwadi police have registered a case against the accused for abetment of suicide.

The deceased has been identified as Sachin Kattimani, a resident of Dhobarwadi, Ghorpadi. His mother, Yellakka Hanumanta Kattimani (61), lodged a complaint at the Wanwadi police station. Following her statement, police registered a case against Steven Nagel and Vijay Ingle.

Harassment Over Loan Repayment

According to police reports, Sachin had borrowed money from the accused on interest. However, when he struggled to repay the amount along with the high-interest charges, the accused allegedly began threatening and harassing him. They repeatedly called and intimidated him, pushing him into severe distress.

On March 1, overwhelmed by mental pressure, Sachin hanged himself at his residence. Upon receiving the report, Sub-Inspector Nandkumar Jadhav visited the site. During the investigation, it was confirmed that Sachin took the extreme step due to the harassment by the accused. Consequently, a case was filed against Steven Nagel and Vijay Ingle under relevant sections of the law. Sub-Inspector Riyaz Sayyed is leading the investigation.

Previous Actions Against Illegal Money Lending

Earlier, former Police Commissioner Amitabh Gupta had ordered a crackdown on illegal money lending activities in the city. Several cases had been registered against unlicensed lenders exploiting borrowers with excessive interest rates.

This tragic incident highlights the continuing menace of illegal loan sharks, and authorities are expected to take stringent action to curb such unlawful practices.
