In the latest development, the interim government led by Mohammad Yunus in Bangladesh has joined hands with Myanmar’s rebel group Arakan Army for a special task. The Arakan Army has achieved rapid success in recent times and has almost captured Myanmar’s Rakhine province. Along with this, it has also gained control over the border with Bangladesh. Mohammad Yunus’ administration wants to take advantage of this to solve the Rohingya crisis.
Khalilur Rahman, the high representative of the chief advisor on the Rohingya issue, said that the country is in touch with the Arakan Army to protect the border and repatriate the Rohingya. In a program, he said, ‘The day the Arakan Army hoisted its flag on our border, I immediately realized that this is a new world. You have to deal with them.’
Myanmar in the grip of civil war
Since the removal of the democratic government in February 2021 after a military coup. The National Unity Government and dozens of ethnic groups are fighting the military-led junta regime. The Arakan Army has achieved great success in Rakhine province. The Arakan Army, which demands autonomy in Rakhine state, controls 90 percent of the province, including the entire 271 km long border with Bangladesh. More than one million Rohingyas have fled from Rakhine state to Bangladesh through this route.

Rahman further said, “A new neighbour is emerging and Bangladesh wants to be friendly with them and not dominate them. This is the only land border apart from our border with India. It is also in our national interest to reach out to them. We can start the process of building trust, confidence and lay the foundation of long-term friendly relations.”
