The biggest carnival parade took place in Cologne with tens of thousands of carnival revelers watching from the sidelines.

Germany has experienced several attacks recently.

In December, six people were killed in an attack on a Christmas market in Magdeburg and in January a toddler and adult were killed in a knife attack in the Bavarian town of Aschaffenburg.
