Former AIADMK MLA Om Sakthi Sekar and his supporters were arrested on Sunday for defying police orders and attempting to inaugurate a statue of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MGR at Moolakadai near Villianur.
The statue, inaugurated by former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa in 1996, was recently removed following the widening of Villianur by-pass road. After being re-installed following the completion of the work, AIADMK’s Puducherry unit placed a plaque and called for a function to commemorate its inauguration.
However, Mr. Sekar, who was also a member of AIADMK Cadres Right Retrieval Organisation, alleged that their names were not included in the plaque. Meanwhile, former AIADMK MLA A. Anbalagan and the party’s Puducherry unit secretary on Friday inaugurated the statue. Following this, Mr. Sekar announced that the other faction would also inaugurate it, triggering protests from the AIADMK.
On Sunday, members of both factions gathered at Moolakadai and raised slogans against each other, leading to the arrests.
