The Thiruvananthapuram Fast Track Special Court, which deals with child abuse cases, on Saturday sentenced a tuition teacher to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment (RI) for sexually assaulting a 10-year-old girl.

Special Judge Rekha R., who found Devadas, 76, of Kamaleswaram, guilty of the crime, also imposed a fine of ₹10,000, the default of which would lead to a two months’ additional imprisonment.

According to the prosecution led by special public prosecutor Vijay Mohan R.S., Devadas assaulted the child during a tuition class on February 2, 2023. The girl, traumatised by the experience, subsequently avoided attending tuition classes due to fear. She revealed the incident two weeks later when she was asked by her parents.

Following the discovery of the abuse, the child’s family filed a complaint with the Child Welfare Committee, following which the Thampanoor police registered a case. The prosecution examined 15 witnesses and presented 16 exhibits.
