CPI(M)‘s Praja Chaitanya Yatras to begin on March 8

The Communist Party of India-Marxist [CPI(M)] will organise ‘Praja Chaitanya Yatras’ from March 8 to 17 to highlight the problems faced by the public. The party will also organise ‘maha dharnas’ and protests from March 22 to 28 in front of government offices and petition the officials concerned.

Addressing a press conference here on Sunday (March 2), CPI(M) state secretary V. Srinivasa Rao said the maha dharnas would be organised to highlight the issues identified during the Praja Chaitanya Yatras. If the government failed to address the issues flagged by the party during the maha dharnas, the CPI(M) would announce further action plans and people agitations in  April and May.

CPIM State and district-level leadership will tour the State to study public issues. They will conduct foot marches and cycle rallies, and on March 8, International Women’s Day, they will demand the implementation of the promised free bus scheme and the announcement by Ugadi of unemployment allowance for youth and a cash scheme for women, he said.

Mr. Srinivasa Rao said that the people waited for nine months hoping that the new government would resolve their issues, but in vain. There was no consistency in the government’s promises and actions. The government was trying to reduce the Super Six, key promises made in the run-up to the general elections, by not allocating sufficient funds.

He said the government was misleading the public in the case of the Public-Private-People Partnership policy.

A mere ₹309 crore was allocated for Veligonda, he said and sought to know when the project would be completed. The Centre has promised ₹12,000 crore for Polavaram but only ₹6,000 crore was allocated in the State budget. The government was betraying women by not mentioning the free bus scheme and not allocating funds for the ₹1,500 monthly allowance for women, he said.

The burden of electricity tariffs was imposed on the people, and meters were installed to unnecessarily pay crores of rupees to the Adani Group, he alleged and urged the public to oppose this. The government has no courage to cancel the SECI agreement, while Sri Lanka, a small country, had the guts to cancel its agreement with Adani, he added.

CPI(M) State Secretariat Member K. Prabhakar Reddy also spoke.
