This Bollywood movie of 1997 was produced by Surinder Kapoor and Boney Kapoor. It was a remake of a Telugu movie called Subalagnam, that became a major commercial success, grossing Rs 48.77 crore against its Rs 6.30 crore budget. It became the seventh highest-grossing Indian film and was widely praised for the performances of the lead actresses. We are talking about Anil Kapoor’s Judaai that also featured Sridevi, Urmila Matondkar, Kader Khan, Farida Jalal, Johnny Lever, Paresh Rawal, Upasana Singh and Saeed Jaffrey. The plot revolves around the travails of a greedy wife Kajal (Sridevi), who lured by wealth, convinces her husband (Kapoor) to marry a second time.
Did you know that Anil Kapoor was initially reluctant to do this film? In an interview with Hindustan Times, the actor revealed, “I kept refusing the film because I couldn’t connect with the character. But there was pressure from my family and the production house. Our family’s production company was going through a tough time, especially after Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja flopped, causing a financial loss. That’s why I eventually agreed to do the film.”
On February 28, Judaai completed 28 years, and Urmila Matondkar marked the occasion on social media. She took to her Instagram Stories to express her gratitude and reflect on the film that played a significant role in shaping her career. The actress reposted a fan edit, writing, “28 years of #Judaai, thank you for all your love.”
