PUNE: March is expected to be hotter than usual in Pune and other parts of Maharashtra, with an increased likelihood of heatwaves, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

In its seasonal forecast issued at the beginning of the month, the IMD predicted higher-than-normal maximum and minimum temperatures across most parts of the country, including Maharashtra. Pune has been earmarked as one of the regions likely to experience heatwave-like conditions for most of March, with the number of such days expected to exceed the usual count.

Historically, March temperatures in Pune have touched 40 degrees Celsius. A heatwave in the region is declared when temperatures reach or exceed this threshold. Factors such as high humidity, strong winds, and prolonged exposure to extreme heat can further intensify heatwave conditions, posing risks to human health and livestock.

Pune has already experienced unusually high temperatures this year. January saw temperatures soaring to 34-35 degrees Celsius, while February was also warmer than normal, with areas like Lonavala and Shirur recording highs above 38 degrees Celsius. On Saturday.
