Protests halt Kumarichantha flyover construction works
T'puram: The construction of the Kumarichantha flyover on NH 66 came to a standstill after a group of local residents staged protests demanding that the flyover be built with pillars instead of an embankment. The group is concerned about the potential impact of the proposed embankment, as it could interfere with trade operations on either side of the structure.
The protesters, who formed an action council, are urging the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to revise the plan. Earlier, the NHAI planned to construct the Enchakkal flyover as an embankment but later changed it to a pillar-supported structure following strong opposition from the locals. The protesters at Kumarichantha are now expecting a similar revision.
The protest is being led by LDF councillor and former standing committee chairman S Salim, who insisted that work be stopped until a final decision is made. The protesters also erected a barricade at the site. Salim and members of the action council also confronted the contractor, Cherian Varkey Constructions, demanding an immediate halt to the work. The contractor, however, stated that any decision regarding the design of the flyover must come from the NHAI or the state govt.
Salim said that they are not against development, but the concerns of the local people should be addressed.
Meanwhile, NHAI officials declined to comment on the issue. According to them flyover is essential to address increasing traffic congestion and recurring accidents in the area. The project is expected to improve traffic flow between Chackai and Kovalam.
