Jailbreak: Prisoner still at large, probe on
Ranchi: Police are investigating how life-term convict Samir Tirkey escaped from Birsa Munda Central Jail in Ranchi on Thursday evening by examining CCTV footages of the prison and its surrounding areas.
Tirkey, who had been transferred from Gumla seven years ago, went for a routine walk outside his ward but failed to return. The escape was discovered during the morning prisoner count. Tirkey's was the only jailbreak from the jail in Hotwar in recent years.
Earlier, several prisoners had managed to slip out of police custody from the prison ward of Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (Rims), where they were admitted for treatment or health checkups.
Sadar Deputy SP Sanjeev Besra said, "Initial investigation suggests Tirkey climbed the 30-foot jail building using a covered electricity wire connecting the ground to the roof. We are investigating how he managed to descend from the other side."
However, his whereabouts remained unknown till Saturday evening. A police team has been dispatched to Tirkey's village in Gumla district to question his family members. Authorities will also conduct a security review of the facility.
Ranchi DC Manjunath Bhajantri, acknowledged the jailbreak and said the breach of security is being probed.
