Spanish retail giant Inditex has launched its youth-focused fashion brand Bershka in India, competing in the value fashion segment. Bershka, Inditex’s second-largest brand globally after Zara, unveiled at the Phoenix Palladium Mall in Lower Parel, Mumbai, and aims to challenge Reliance’s youth-centric retail chain, Yousta.
The launch in Mumbai comes as Inditex, one of the world’s largest fashion retailers with annual sales exceeding $37 billion, now wants to expand in the Indian market. While Inditex operates Zara and Massimo Dutti through joint ventures with Tata Group’s Trent, Bershka has been independently introduced by the Spanish retail major.
According to a report by Financial Express, Inditex may also bring its fourth fashion brand, Pull & Bear, to India in the near future.
Bershka Competition To Reliance
The Bershka store in Mumbai spans 5,000-8,000 sq. ft. and has features like physical checkouts, self-checkout drop-off points, and fitting rooms designed to enhance customer convenience. Bershka operates in the value fashion segment, offering garments and accessories for men and women priced between Rs 500 and Rs 2,500. Online shoppers can avail of delivery services for Rs 290, with free shipping on orders over Rs 2,990 for non-discounted items.
Launched in August 2023 by Reliance Retail, Yousta has been aggressively expanding across India. With over 55 stores in 27 cities, Yousta plans to reach 1,000 stores within the next two to three years. The brand offers a broad range of affordable products, including garments, footwear, and accessories, with prices under Rs 1,000 for most items. Future plans include adding cosmetics and fragrances to its merchandise.
India’s value fashion market, valued at $65 billion and growing at 12-15% annually, is a significant market for brands like Bershka and Yousta. Both brands aim to capture the attention of price-conscious consumers.
