The Coimbatore Corporation has decided to engage a third-party audit to assess the quality of roads laid in the city.
This decision follows concerns about the poor quality of roads that were recently re-laid after installation of pipes for drinking water and underground drainage (UGD) systems across the city.
Corporation Commissioner M. Sivaguru Prabakaran acknowledged the issue, stating that technical challenges arose when roads were re-laid after pipeline work. Another major concern was leakage from old UGD pipelines, some of which were over 30 years old, leading to road damage.
“To ensure the quality of both newly laid and re-laid roads, we have decided to engage third-party agencies for auditing, which will include tests for thickness and material quality. Testing will be conducted by institutions with established laboratories, including Government College of Technology, PSG College of Technology, and Coimbatore Institute of Technology. If the audit finds that the required standards are not met, the contractor will be required to re-lay the roads without additional payment,” the Commissioner said.
