Nagpur: "The
film industry has evolved with modern technology, and it is now drawing the younger generation. We have worked in this industry for years, but it is time for the new generation to step in," said Padma Bhushan and 12-time National Award-winning filmmaker
Jahnu Barua at the grand inauguration of the Nagpur edition of the 23rd Pune International Film Festival (PIFF) on Friday evening at VR Mall, Cinepolis.
The festival, jointly organised by Govt of Maharashtra, Maharashtra Chitrapat Rangabhoomi Ani Sanskrutik Vikas Mahamandal, Department of Cultural Affairs, Pune Film Foundation, and in collaboration with Meraki Performing Arts Organisation, was inaugurated in the presence of acclaimed filmmaker Jabbar Patel, festival coordinator Ajay Gampawar, PIFF creative head Samar Nakhate, and deputy director Aditi Akkalkotkar.

Veteran director Jabbar Patel highlighted the evolving landscape of
Indian cinema. "Globally, films have the power to depict real societal issues. In India, action films like ‘Baahubali' and ‘Pushpa' have leveraged technology to achieve widespread popularity," he said. Patel also noted that this year marks the centenary of legendary artists Raj Kapoor and Mohammad Rafi, making the festival an important platform for young cinephiles. He encouraged audiences to watch telefilms dedicated to these icons and stated that the 15 films being screened will serve as a guiding light for aspiring filmmakers.
The festival opened with a mesmerising accordion performance by Harshal Thomas, followed by the unveiling of the official festival catalog by the dignitaries. Ajay Gampawar felicitated Jahnu Barua and Jabbar Patel, while other key contributors, including Samar Nakhate, Cinepolis' Amit Kori, and host Asawari Deshpande, were also honoured.
