Noida: The Noida Metro Rail Corporation (NMRC) issued a request for proposal (RFP) to hire an agency for conducting a geotechnical investigation along the proposed metro corridor from Botanical Garden to Sector 142.
A geotechnical investigation is a critical process in metro projects that assesses soil, rock, and groundwater conditions to ensure safe and efficient construction of underground or elevated structures. It provides engineers with essential data for designing foundations, tunnels, and other infrastructure components based on the ground's characteristics.
"The selected agency will also be responsible for identifying utilities and pipelines along the route that may require shifting," said NMRC spokesperson Nisha Wadhwan.
As per the RFP, the investigation will involve drilling 150mm diameter boreholes to depths ranging from 5 to 30 metres using a hydraulic boring method.
The work will include recording groundwater levels in boreholes after drilling, collecting rock core samples, and performing necessary laboratory tests on the extracted samples.
Additionally, the agency will prepare a comprehensive report detailing soil and rock classifications, analysing test data, and recommending suitable foundation types for the proposed elevated corridor. The report will include design calculations, highlight design criteria and methodology, and categorise different soil strata encountered during the study.
The agency would need to complete field work within 60 days from the date of award of work.
The proposed 11.6km metro corridor will run along the Noida Expressway, linking the Delhi Metro's Blue and Magenta lines with the Aqua Line corridor. This extension will strengthen the metro network by connecting Botanical Garden to Sector 142 and extending connectivity to Pari Chowk in Greater Noida.
It will also serve as a partial mass transit link between Delhi and Noida International Airport in Jewar, located 40km from Pari Chowk. A detailed project report (DPR) for the corridor, prepared by Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), is currently awaiting approval from the central govt.
However, sources indicate that with Noida airport expected to commence passenger flights in April, the metro corridor may receive approval soon.
In June 2024, the state cabinet approved the Rs 2,254.35 crore project, which is set to be funded by the Centre and the Noida Authority.
