Noida: A man, who was arrested in a snatching case on Monday night following a gunfight in Phase 1 area, escaped police custody while receiving treatment at a govt hospital on Tuesday.
The accused, who has eight cases registered against him across NCR, was initially arrested along with an accomplice, a pistol, and live ammunition.
A departmental inquiry has now been initiated against three cops who were guarding him.
Shyam Kumar alias Babbal (26), who is a native of Bihar and a resident of Pandav Nagar, Delhi, was arrested on Monday by Phase 1 police, said Sumit Shukla, additional deputy commissioner of police, Noida.
Officials were conducting checks near Sector 15A when Kumar and his accomplice, Sameer Ali (22), were spotted on a bike.
When police signalled them to stop, they tried to escape. Their two-wheeler skidded, and the suspects collapsed on the road. Kumar then fired at the police, and a gunfight broke out, during which he was injured in the leg.
Ali escaped but was later caught during combing.
Kumar was sent to the Sector 39 district hospital for treatment, from where he escaped on Tuesday morning. Three teams were formed, and Kumar was caught in Anand Vihar in Delhi. The accused was planning to leave for Bihar.
"A departmental inquiry is being taken against the sub-inspectors in charge of supervising the suspect. Further legal action is underway," the ADCP said.
