The Principal Sub Court in Dindigul on Tuesday convicted three former police personnel for offences, including assault of a woman with the intent to outrage her modesty, in 2001 in the district.

Principal Sub Judge V. Deepa convicted the former police personnel: the then Inspector of Police Rangasamy and the then Head Constables Veera Thevar and Chinna Thevar for the offences under Section 342 (punishment for wrongful confinement), Section 354 (assaulting a woman with the intent to outrage her modesty) and Section 306 (abetment of suicide) of Indian Penal Code.

The men were sentenced to one-year imprisonment for offence under Section 342, three years for offence under Section 354 and five years for offence under Section 306 of IPC. The court said that the sentences shall run concurrently. The court imposed a total fine of ₹36,000 each.

The case of the prosecution was that a team of police personnel of Sempatti police station in Dindigul district picked up a woman at midnight in February 2001 in the name of inquiry into an alleged case of theft.

It was said that the woman was stripped naked inside the police station. Later, she was let off at around 2 p.m. that day. Unable to bear the humiliation, the woman jumped into a well. However, she was rescued and admitted to a hospital for treatment.

The woman’s husband, who was also subjected to humiliation, later died by suicide. Based on a complaint, the case was registered against the three former police personnel.
