The Joint Action Council of Tamil Nadu Teachers Organisations and the Government Employees Organisation, along with the Tamil Nadu Revenue Officers Association, led a protest at the Collectorate here on Tuesday.

The protest, which followed the breakdown of talks between the organisation and the Tamil Nadu government, held in all districts in the State.

The protest, which was for the implementation of a 10-fold charter of demands, insisted on the reviving of the old pension scheme and withdrawal of the new pension scheme.

The revenue officials and teachers who took one day for the protest made the officers and schools look empty. As the protest was carried out despite a Madurai bench of Madras High Court’s direction against the bandh call issued earlier.

P. Srinivasan, district secretary, Tamil Nadu Elementary school teachers’ union in Madurai issued a statement condemned the arrest of teachers and government employees by the police during the protest in Thoothukudi Collectorate.

“Mayil, one of the JACTTO-GEO organisers was also detained during the protest. The act of police and district administration of preventing the peaceful protesters from entering the Collectorate premises was against Article 19(1)(C) of the Indian Constitution which guarantees all the citizens the right to form associations and unions or cooperative societies,” they added.

They also demanded for the immediate release of more than 350 protesters who were detained by the police during the protest.

“Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin who controls the Tamil Nadu police should initiate action against the police officials who arrested teachers and government officials,” the statement added.
