The demonstrations organised by the Joint Action Council of Tamilnadu Teachers Organisation and Government Employees Organisation (JACTTO-GEO) in support of their charter of demands in Tiruchi and other districts in the central region on Tuesday saw the participation of several government employees and teachers.

One of the main demands of the JACTTO-GEO to the ruling DMK government was the implementation of the old pension scheme as promised in the run up to the assembly elections in 2021.  The demonstration at Tiruchi was organised near the Collectorate with around 400 JACTTO-GEO members taking part, said police sources. Lasting about two hours, the demonstration was led by the JACTTO-GEO district organiser Palpandi.

The demonstrators demanded the State government to withdraw the new pension scheme for those who had joined the government service after April 1, 2003 and implement the old pension scheme. They also wanted the State government to take immediate steps to fill up the over 30% vacancies that existed in different departments.

‘Demonstrations by the JACTTO-GEO members in support of their demands were held in Pudukottai, Ariyalur, Karur and Mayiladuthurai districts also. Police sources said many government employees availed casual leave on Tuesday to take part in the demonstrations.
