Guwahati: Union minister for communications and development of north eastern region (DoNER), Jyotiraditya Scindia, on Tuesday announced that the Centre was looking at establishing four hyperscale data centres in Assam, which will be the largest in Asia.
The minister also announced the launch of a 5G Lab at Gauhati University, which aims to foster research and skill development in next-generation telecom technologies, including 5G and beyond.
"The central govt is going to set up hyperscale data centres in 1 million square feet area," Scindia said, while speaking at the I-Way to ‘Viksit Assam' session during the first day of the Advantage Assam 2.0 summit. To accelerate this transformation, Ministry of Communication has undertaken an investment, worth Rs. 4,000 crore, to strengthen Assam's telecom infrastructure..
"Along with 5G deployment in Assam, we are also looking at establishing Asia's largest four hyperscale data centres, which will be set up over an area of one million square feet," Scindia said. "We already have two 5G labs — one at IIT-Guwahati and the other at NIT Silchar. The third one will be operational from today at Gauhati University," Scindia added.
As Assam is eyeing big with Tata's under-construction semiconductor facility, at an investment of Rs 27,000 crore at Jagiroad, near Guwahati, Scindia said that the future will be dependent on semiconductors. "Our pathway is very clear. Assam has to drive its own future. Assam has to innovate for the northeast. Assam has to grow for India to grow," he said.
As a DoNER minister, Scindia appealed for investment in Assam and was all praise for CM Himanta Biswa Sarma. He said that the capability in infrastructure, innovation and ability to deliver high ROC and ROE in investment lay in Assam."I commit to you that we will ensure every investment receives its priority, not only in Assam, but across the length and breadth of the northeast," Scindia urged investors.
