Zokhawthar: Four members of a family from West Bengal were upset when they were not allowed to cross over to Myanmar to visit Rih Dil Lake in the neighbouring country's Chin state, a popular tourist destination for Indians on the opposite side of Zokhawthar in Champhai district of Mizoram on Feb 22. The same fate befell separate groups of five tourists from Assam's Silchar that afternoon.
Non-Mizo Indian tourists are no longer allowed to visit Rih Dil Lake in Myanmar and other destinations in Rihkhawdar town, which is only 3 km from the last Indian border point at Zokhawthar in Mizoram.
Tourists gathered at Zokhawthar, situated 174 km southeast of Aizawl, were victims of a lack of up-to-date information about the development. After being denied a permit from the concerned authorities, they approached Assam Rifles officials who have been manning the border. They were told that given the security scenario on the other side of the border, Indian citizens who are not residents of Mizoram are not allowed to visit Myanmar through this border point.
Zokhawthar is connected with Myanmar's Rikhawdar town by a bailey bridge over the Tiau river, which serves as the natural boundary between India and Myanmar in this region.
