Engineer loses Rs10L in online task fraud
Pune: A 29-year-old engineer, who was looking for a job, fell prey to cybercrooks and lost Rs 10 lakh after they offered him a part-time job of online tasks between Nov 25 and 28 last year.
The victim filed a complaint application with the Pune cybercrime police. After preliminary investigations, a case was registered with the Haveli police on Monday.
An officer from the Pune Rural police said the complainant is a resident of Nanded city and is looking for a job. "According to the complainant, in Nov last year, he received a message on his cellphone offering him a part-time job. When he accepted the offer, he was told to share his personal information, including bank details," the officer said.
He said initially, the victim was given a task of subscribing to a video on a video-sharing app. He was promised Rs 150 for the task. After completing the task, the amount was credited to his account. "After that, cybercrooks told him to invest in prepaid tasks and promised a 40% profit on his investments," he said.
The officer said the victim transferred Rs 2,000 to a bank account number given to him and he got Rs 800 returns on it. "To earn more, the victim transferred Rs 10 lakh to different bank account numbers. He was told that he earned a profit of Rs 15 lakh," the officer said.
The investigating officer said when the engineer tried to withdraw his money, the crooks told him to transfer Rs 2.70 lakh as tax. The victim realised that he was being duped and approached the police. "Our investigations are ongoing," the officer said.
