Varanasi: A five-day national workshop on 'Doing Ethnography: From Fieldwork to Thick Descriptions' commenced at
Banaras Hindu University on Monday. The workshop is being organised jointly by the Centre for Intercultural Studies and the Malaviya Moolya Anishilan Kendra.
Prof. Chakravarti Mahajan from Delhi University delivered the inaugural lecture, discussing critical ethnography and its practical aspects.
He explained the methods used in ethnographic research, techniques of conducting fieldwork, and how to write data after fieldwork. Prof. Mahajan emphasised the importance of the researcher's perspective in ethnographic research, highlighting that it differs from monolithic identity as an event can be interpreted in various ways. He also answered questions from the audience.
Prof. Rajkumar, coordinator of the Centre for Intercultural Studies, highlighted the significance of ethnography in folk literature and cultural studies. The workshop is being coordinated by Prof. Sushmita Singh, Rajeev Dubey, and Swapnil Singh from the Department of Sociology.
The five-day workshop aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of ethnography, from fieldwork to writing thick descriptions.
It will cover various aspects of ethnographic research, including data collection, analysis, and representation.
