Coimbatore Corporation has submitted a proposal to the State government seeking ₹23 crore for installing new streetlights and replacing non-functional and low-illumination ones across the city.

The proposal follows multiple complaints about inadequate lighting due to ageing infrastructure and reduced illumination levels.

Corporation Commissioner M. Sivaguru Prabakaran said, “We have proposed installing 5,467 new lights with poles and replacing old lights across the city. There are around 1,03,000 streetlights in Coimbatore city, and this proposal addresses the need for lighting on newly laid and expanded roads. We are only seeking fund allocation from the government, and once the funds are sanctioned, we will begin the installation. To improve streetlight maintenance, we have awarded zone-wise tenders to enhance efficiency, eliminating complaints related to a single contract.”

He added that the Corporation was awaiting the Highways Department’s handover of the warranty for lights installed on flyovers at GN Mills and Kavundampalayam. “Once the warranty is handed over, we can ask the agency concerned to replace the lights,” he said.

Regarding the integration of streetlights with the Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) for monitoring, he said, “There are two monitoring systems—Individual Light Monitoring (ILM) and Group Light Monitoring. ILM identifies faulty lights individually, but it is costly to implement. Currently, we use Group Light Monitoring, where multiple streetlights are linked to the ICCC dashboard, allowing us to identify malfunctioning clusters rather than specific lights.”
