Salem tourist drowns after being swept away by giant wave in Kanniyakumari

A tourist from Salem drowned after being swept away by a giant wave in Kanniyakumari and his body was found on Monday following a search operation that lasted more than 15 hours.

An official from District Marine Police said a group of 25 people from Salem visited Kanniyakumari on Sunday. Among them, the deceased M. Vijay, 27, ventured onto a dangerous rock behind Kamarajar Memorial, a prohibited area. While he was standing on the rock, a giant wave struck and washed him away into the sea.

The Marine police were immediately alerted and search operations began. After continuous search, Vijay’s body was recovered approximately 200 metres from where he was swept away.

The body was sent for post-mortem at Asaripallam Government Medical College and Hospital. Further investigations are under way.
