Mangaluru: The Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) made a notable advancement in supporting Tulu language by adding it to the primary signboard at its building's entrance. Mayor Manoj Kumar, unveiling the board in front of the MCC office on Monday, said the decision of the city corporation reflects the local body's dedication to acknowledging and raising the prominence of the Tulu within official premises.
"We have taken a significant step towards promoting the Tulu language by incorporating it on the main signboard displayed at the entrance of the MCC building. This endeavour will certainly inspire other urban local bodies within the undivided Dakshina Kannada district to add Tulu script on their boards," he said.
He added that initiatives will be taken to incorporate Tulu in the boards at the zonal offices of the MCC at Surathkal and Kadri. Further, Tulu will also be added to the boards at two MCC auditoriums – Kudmul Ranga Rao Town Hall and Ambedkar Bhavan. Tulu boards welcoming people to the city at various entry points will also be erected, the mayor said.
"We are not asking the govt to have a separate Tulunadu state. However, we have been demanding due recognition for the language by giving it official language status and including it in Schedule VIII of the Constitution. In addition, MLAs and MPs of the region will also be urged to consider incorporating Tulu in signboards at the Mangaluru International Airport (MIA), New Mangalore Port, and railway stations," he said.
Mangaluru City North MLA Y Bharath Shetty said amongst the ‘Pancha Dravida Bhashe', four languages - Kannada, Malayalam, Telugu, and Tamil - secured official state language status and inclusion in Schedule VIII of the Constitution. However, Tulu remains unrecognised despite its significance. He emphasised that all Tuluva people must unite, setting aside their differences, to advocate for this recognition.
He noted the public's request to rename MIA to Tulunadu International Airport and calls to designate a railway station after Tulunadu. He acknowledged these as reasonable requests and assured that these matters would be addressed in the appropriate forum.
Dayanand Kattalsar, former chairman of the Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy, said Tuluvas should respect all languages and they should revere Tulu as their native tongue.
MCC council opposition leader Anil Kumar, former mayor K Bhaskar, corporators, and members of various Tulu organisations were present.
