Kurukshetra: Union agriculture minister
Shivraj Singh Chouhan has announced plans to form a national-level committee dedicated to promoting natural farming. He hopes that training farmers in adopting sustainable agricultural practices will increase their income, conserve soil fertility, and make chemical-free food available to consumers.
Chouhan made the announcement during a visit to Kaithala village in Haryana's Kurukshetra district, where he observed natural farming techniques under the guidance of Gujarat governor Acharya Devvrat. Prior to this, he toured Gurukul in Kurukshetra, inspecting native breed cow shelters, biogas plants, and hostel facilities. Devvrat briefed him on the institution's progress and contributions to sustainable agriculture.
Kaithala's flourishing natural wheat, sugarcane, vegetables, and fruit-bearing plants impressed Chouhan, while he also witnessed traditional jaggery-making and sampled freshly prepared jaggery. Praising Acharya Devvrat's advocacy for sustainable agriculture, Chouhan highlighted the detrimental effects of excessive chemical use in modern farming, including soil degradation, harm to beneficial insects, and increasing health concerns.
The minister cautioned the farmers that continuing practices of this sort would impact future generations negatively. Encouraging a gradual transition, Chouhan advised them to start natural farming on one or two acres and dispelled concerns about lower yields. He emphasised that with proper techniques, natural farming enhances both productivity and crop quality.
He also underscored Prime Minister Narendra Modi's commitment to natural farming, crediting Devvrat for his significant role in advancing the mission. Chouhan encouraged farmers to visit Kaithala's model farm for practical insights and inspiration. Concluding his visit, Chouhan expressed his intent to meet with farmers in Chandigarh to discuss agricultural challenges and promote sustainable solutions in a collaborative manner.
