Made in Israel – Arrow 3 missile defence system – is going to protect Europe. The development work has started in Germany, a German army official informed on Thursday. the deadline has been set to achieve its initial operational capability by this year’s end. At the same time, it is expected to achieve full operational capability by 20230.
Three basses have been selected for these Israeli-developed defence systems. The first base is located at Holzdorf airbase, about 75 kilometres south of the German capital on the border between the states of Bandenberg and Saxony-Anhalt.
Germany purchased the missile defence system from Israel in order to fill the gap in the country’s air defence system. Arrow-3 system is the most powerful and accurate missile air defence system of Israel. It is capable of intercepting and destroying incoming missiles at altitudes of over 100 kms. It means that the defence system neutralises threats outside the atmosphere before they reach their target. Not only that the Arrow-3 is also capable of shooting down ballistic missiles.
Germany previously lacked this capability. After the Cold War, the nation’s air defense systems were partially decommissioned and are currently undergoing reconstruction. In response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Germany has backed the European Sky Shield Initiative (ESSI).
According to a spokesman for the German military’s procurement agency, construction at Holzdorf is expected to be completed by 2028. And for other two sites, the documentation is being prepared. Construction planning is scheduled to begin in the next phase. He said no location has yet been determined for the southern bases.
