Thoothukudi Q branch police have seized imported cigarettes and painkiller tablets worth ₹95 lakh during searches at various locations in the city on Friday.
Acting on a tip off that imported cigarettes are being smuggled to Sri Lanka from coastal areas in Thoothukudi, the team comprising officials from the Q branch conducted a midnight search at Inigo Nagar and seized four sacks containing approximately 80,000 imported cigarettes. The worth of the cigarettes is estimated to be ₹20 lakh.
Similarly, during a search at Anna Colony in Threspuram, the police seized painkiller tablets packed in 10 bundles worth around ₹75 lakh, while they were being loaded onto boats for smuggling.
The suspects J. Jeniston, 20, from Threspuram and J. Anish, 25, from Annai Teresa Colony were arrested and the fibre boat used for transportation was also seized. Further investigations are on.
