Varanasi: At least 10 Maha Kumbh pilgrims were killed while 35 others suffered grievous injuries in three separate road accidents in Jaunpur and Bhadohi districts late on Wednesday night.
In Jaunpur, six pilgrims from Jharkhand were killed and five others suffered injuries when an SUV was hit by a vehicle on Sultanpur Road in Badlapur area while a bus collided with a stationary truck in the same area killing three pilgrims from Delhi and and injuring 27 others injured late on Wednesday night.
After taking stock of the accident sites and condition of the injured persons, Jaunpur SP Kaustubh said that an SUV with 11 Maha Kumbh pilgrims on board was passing through Sarokhanpur underpass under Badlapur police station around 1.30am, when a vehicle hit it and fled the scene. Of them, five including three women and a 5-year-old child were killed on the way to the hospital while another injured died during the course of treatment at BHU trauma centre here. The five injured were undergoing treatment at the district hospital. The group of pilgrims from Jharkhand's Hazaribagh was heading to Ayodhya after offering prayers at Kashi Vishwanath temple.
In another accident, a bus with pilgrims from Delhi on board collided with a stationary truck in the same area of the district around 3am. Bus driver Sonu Singh (35), a resident of Sultanpuri in New Delhi, his elder sister Bebe (38), and grandmother (65) died on the spot.
Police rushed the 27 injured pilgrims—including Babli (46), Subhash (50), Dinesh (39), Ranjit (40), Dinesh (55), Kavita (45), Harishchandra (61), Bhagwan Singh (58), Mayawati (55), Hemchandra (55), Geeta (55), Kishorilal (60), Lakshmi (32), Suresh (55), Sushila (60), Saraswati (55), Ashish (30), Shakuntala (54), Sushila (65), Ramvati (60), Radha (70), Geetanjali (31), Tara (65), Kamlesh (50), Mansha (48), Harishchandra (61), and Meena (65)—all residents of Madipur locality in New Delhi, to the district hospital for treatment.
Upon receiving information, Jaunpur district magistrate Dinesh Chandra and SP reached the accident sites to take stock and later visited the injured pilgrims. The bodies were sent for post-mortem. SP said that extra police deployment was being ensured in the areas of Badlapur after declaring the sites as black spots. The injured persons informed the police that a group of 150 pilgrims from Madipur had left home in three buses on Feb 15 night. They first reached Chitrakoot on Feb 16, after which they stayed in Prayagraj on Feb 17 for Maha Kumbh bath. On Wednesday, they offered prayers at Kashi Vishwanath temple and were heading to Ayodhya late in the night, when the accident took place.
In Bhadohi district, one Nitesh (35) from Mysore in Karnataka was killed, while his mother Shakuntala, relative Pushpalata of Assam and her son Hemant (35) suffered grave injuries, when their car collided with a stationary truck in Aurai area. They were heading to Prayagraj, when the accident occured.
