US airports prepare for record-breaking Thanksgiving-like travel surges in 2025, with demand expected to double by 2028.
US airports are bracing for “Thanksgiving-like” travel surges over a span of 50 days next year, with this number expected to double to 100 days by 2028. However, the current air travel infrastructure is not equipped to handle such a dramatic increase in passenger volume.
This stark warning is highlighted in an industry report that outlines critical measures needed to help former President Donald Trump deliver a “golden age of travel” in anticipation of major upcoming events, including the 2025 Ryder Cup, 2026 World Cup, 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games, and America’s 250th anniversary.
The Commission on Seamless and Secure Travel, consisting of former government officials and private sector leaders from airport management and investment sectors, emphasized the need for immediate improvements to the nation’s “outdated” air travel system to effectively manage the projected surge in demand.
In addition to security upgrades recommended in the report, US Travel, the industry’s leading trade association, continues to advocate for the urgent modernization of air traffic control technology and solutions to address the ongoing shortage of air traffic controllers.
