Woman killed after house collapses during renovation
Rajkot: A two-storey building suddenly collapsed, between 7.30am and 8am in the Sahajanand Nagar area of Gondal town, trapping one Sunil Varghani, his wife Usha and his elderly mother under the debris.
The Gondal municipality fire department began rescue operations with earthmovers and cranes and Varghani and his mother were rescued, but Usha, 40, was declared dead at the spot.
Varghani and his mother were taken to a private hospital for treatment.
Gondal deputy superintendent of police (DySP) Kishorsinh Zala said the investigation revealed that renovation of the house was underway, which caused the collapse.
Gondal City B Division and A Division police teams rushed to the scene to aid rescue efforts which involved the fire brigade, volunteers and social organizations. An accidental death case has been registered at Gondal City B Division police station.
Ajitsinh Vala, fire officer of Gondal municipality, reported that they received a distress call about 8.30am, after which rescue efforts were launched. The operation lasted about three and a half hours, involving over 20 fire department personnel and volunteers.
Sunil Varghani, the house owner, runs a paan stall near Gondal railway station.
