Prayagraj: The ash-smeared Naga Sadhus, revered as the torchbearers of Sanatan Dharma showcasing a vision for spiritual enlightenment, are now helping Maha Kumbh devotees in safeguarding the real-life vision also.
A non-profit organisation, Eyebetes Foundation, has roped in Naga Sadhus to spread the message among pilgrims to get their eyes checked free of cost at a camp in the Arail side of Kumbh Mela. Naga seers, many of whom are still camping in the Kumbh, can be seen carrying vision charts on their backs and urging devotees to get their eyes tested if they are unable to read the chart.
Eyebetes Foundation head Dr Nishant Kumar, a Mumbai-based ophthalmologist who claims to hold three Guinness World Records, said the organisation will be distributing free prescription glasses and sunglasses among pilgrims till Feb 24. Dr Kumar has set up a camp opposite the Parmarth Niketan camp (in Arail) where he and his team offer free screening for eyes and diabetes.
"Most people visiting the Maha Kumbh come with the twin purpose of taking the dip at the Sangam and seeking the blessings of Naga Sadhus. Therefore, I spoke to some Naga seers who are still camping here and sought their help in keeping people's eyes healthy and safe. They agreed to support us by wearing a vision test chart on their backs," said Dr Kumar. Now these Naga Sadhus are blessing the devotees and spreading awareness to get their eyes checked, he added.
"We are offering free eye check ups to the police personnel too who have been working tirelessly at the Maha Kumbh. We hope that more than 50,000 people will benefit from our work," said Dr Kumar.
