HC closes petitions on Tirupparankundram issue

Published - February 19, 2025 09:00 pm IST - MADURAI

The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Wednesday closed the two petitions that challenged the prohibitory order issued by Madurai Collector under Section 163 of BNSS earlier this month, in the wake of Hindu Munnani planning a protest with regard to the Tirupparankundram issue and the statement issued by Madurai city police denying permission for the protest.

A Division Bench of Justices J. Nisha Banu and S. Srimathy closed the petitions. Earlier, the court had allowed Hindu Munnani to conduct the protest in Palanganatham junction from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. on February 4.

The right to freedom of speech and expression should always be subject to public order and peace and other restrictions imposed by the Constitution, the court had observed.
