New bridge to come up across Cheyyar river in Uthiramerur constituency

For residents of Ilayanarvelllur and Neyyadupakkam in Uthiramerur Assembly constituency, a bridge across the Cheyyar River will be a boon. Instead of having to skip school during the monsoon or struggling to go to their work places in the nearby industrial corridors of Sriperumbudur and Oragadam due to the swirling waters of the river, their lives could go on undisrupted.

K. Sundar, Uthiramerur MLA, who laid the foundation stone for the construction of a high-level bridge across the river connecting Ilayanarvellur and Neyyadupakkam, said that there have been instances of the government higher secondary school teachers going to Ilayanarvellur to take classes during the monsoon for classes 10 and 12.

“This bridge being constructed by the Highways department under the Ungal Thogudhiyil Mudhal Amaichar Scheme, would be a boon for not just residents of these two villages but for also those from Magaral, Kavamthandalam and Marutham. They walk across the riverbed when it is dry since this route is safe and does not have heavy vehicles,” said C. Premkumar, a resident of Uthiramerur.

Sources in the Highways department said that the bridge is to be constructed under the comprehensive road infrastructure development programme for the year 2024- 2025. It will be 550 mts long and have 12 spans. The bridge would be 12 mts wide and have footpaths of 1.5 mts width on both sides. The nearest bridge is over 6 km upstream. The approach ramps would be 170 mts on the Ilayanarvellur side and 85 mts long on the Neyyadupakkam side. This bridge will connect the Vengachery - Thirumukoodal Road in Neyyadupakkam side and Ilayanarvellur- Chithathoor Road on the Walajahbad side.
