The CPI has petitioned the Excise department to reverse the liquor policy sanctioning distillery units that would lead to promotion of alcohol-linked social ills and wreak havoc on the groundwater resources in the region.
A delegation of CPI leaders led by A.M. Saleem, State secretary, submitted a memorandum to Excise officials after organising a protest to press the government to abandon its detrimental liquor policy.
The memorandum stated that the Cabinet had recently approved permission to distilleries, licences to new liquor shops and over 200 resto bars overlooking the abundance of outlets already functioning across the Union Territory.
Such a disastrous liquor policy would potentially lead to a rise in anti-social activities and crimes, besides posing threat to safety of women, particularly school and college-going girls, the CPI said.
Moreover, setting up of new distilleries would require largescale extraction of groundwater which would in turn create water scarcity for drinking needs and agricultural purposes., the memorandum said.
